The professional Divisions of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, representing diverse engineering disciplines, are set to undergo harmonisation and strengthening to enhance their effectiveness and relevance.
The professional Divisions were created to promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, professional development and technical advancement across specialised engineering fields. Over the years, however, several challenges have emerged, undermining their effectiveness. These include overlapping mandates, inconsistent levels of activity, low member participation, declining stakeholder engagement, administrative inefficiencies and the dormancy of some Divisions. In addition, it s perceived that some Divisions have continued to operate without clear differentiation or measurable strategic relevance.
Consequently, following approval by the NSE Council, the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, FNSE, F.ASCE, FAEng, MFR, on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, inaugurated a Committee on the Harmonisation and Strengthening of the Divisions.
The Committee has been tasked with reviewing the current structure of the Divisions and recommending a more streamlined and efficient framework. The proposed reform is expected to consolidate related Divisions into a structure capable of delivering greater value to members and stakeholders while enhancing operational efficiency.
Speaking during the inauguration, Engr. Rabiu emphasised that the exercise is not intended as a punitive measure but rather as a strategic and forward-looking reform. “It is important to emphasise that this process is not punitive. Rather, it is a forward-looking reform designed to reposition the professional Divisions as engines of innovation, research, policy advocacy and specialised technical excellence within the NSE”, he stated.
Responding on behalf of the Committee, Engr. Dr. Patricia Opene-Odili, FNSE, who represented the Chairman, expressed appreciation to the NSE leadership for the confidence reposed in the Committee and assured the President that members would diligently execute the Committee’s Terms of Reference and deliver on its mandate.
