The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially launched what is expected to become Africa’s biggest Initial Public Offering (IPO), opening the door for millions of Nigerians to own a stake in the $20 billion refinery for as little as ₦5,250.
What Is An IPO?
IPO means Initial Public Offering. Simply put, it is the first time a private company sells part of its ownership to the public through the stock market. Think of it as buying a small ownership stake in the company rather than simply buying its products.
After receiving approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on September 5, 2026, the refinery is offering 4.1 billion ordinary shares to the public at ₦525 per share, with plans to raise about ₦2.15 trillion to finance an expansion project. The public offer is being described by Aliko Dangote as “the IPO for the people.”
Hereunder are 10 things every Nigerian should know about the Dangote Refinery IPO
1. You Can Invest With Just ₦5,250
For the first time, everyday Nigerians can become shareholders in Africa’s largest refinery with a relatively small amount.
The minimum subscription is 10 ordinary shares, and each share costs ₦525, bringing the entry cost to ₦5,250. Additional shares can be purchased in multiples specified in the offer documents through licensed stockbrokers and approved investment platforms.
2. It Is the Biggest IPO In Africa’s History
Dangote Refinery is seeking to raise ₦2.15 trillion (about $1.6 billion) through the public offer, making it the largest IPO ever undertaken on the African continent.
The refinery is valued at approximately $47–49 billion, making it one of the largest companies expected to trade on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX). Analysts said its listing could significantly increase the overall value of Nigeria’s stock market.
3. The IPO Opens On September 14 and Closes on October 13
The subscription period will run for about one month.
Important dates Nigerians should note:
The public offer has a clear timeline.
Subscription opens on September 14, 2026
Closes on October 13, 2026
And the Expected listing on NGX is November 2026
Investors must complete their applications and payments within the subscription window.
4. The Money Will Fund Expansion
Dangote said the refinery is not raising money because it lacks funding, it is raising capital to finance its next growth phase.
Expansion plans include:
- Expanding refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to about 1.4 million barrels per day by 2029.
- Building additional storage infrastructure across Africa.
- Supporting broader downstream petroleum operations and future refining projects.
If completed, the expansion would make Dangote one of the world’s largest refining operators.
5. Dangote Says It Is “An IPO for the people”
During the signing ceremony in Lagos, Aliko Dangote emphasised that the offer was designed for ordinary Nigerians, not just wealthy investors.
“There is no segregation on who can own these shares.”
He said drivers, teachers, traders, cooks, artisans, civil servants and professionals should all have an opportunity to own part of the refinery and build wealth through equity investment.
The company also hoped to attract millions of African investors beyond Nigeria.
6. How Nigerians Can Buy The Shares
Buying shares does not require visiting Dangote directly.
Investors can subscribe through:
- Licensed stockbroking firms.
- Approved online investment platforms connected to the Nigerian Exchange.
- Designated receiving banks participating in the offer.
- Electronic IPO application portals provided by the issuing houses.
7. What First-Time Investors Need
- A CSCS account (Central Securities Clearing System).
- A stockbroker or investment platform account.
- Bank Verification Number (BVN) and required identification.

8. There May Be Bonus Shares For Long-Term Investors
One attractive feature in the prospectus is a proposed loyalty bonus.
Eligible retail investors who hold their shares for the required period may receive up to two additional shares at no extra cost, subject to the terms in the prospectus and regulatory approval.
This is designed to encourage long-term investing rather than quick selling after listing.
9. The Refinery Has Already Raised Billions Before Going Public
The IPO is not the refinery’s first fundraising exercise.
The company said these funds support expansion while strengthening its capital structure ahead of becoming a publicly listed company.
10. What This Means for Nigerians And the Stock Market
The listing is expected to reshape Nigeria’s capital market in several ways.
- Millions of Nigerians could become shareholders in one of Africa’s biggest industrial companies.
- The Nigerian Exchange is expected to gain one of its largest listed companies by market value.
- Pension funds, institutional investors and retail investors will have access to refinery ownership.
- It could deepen public participation in Nigeria’s capital market and encourage more large private companies to list publicly.
Financial analysts also said the listing could improve liquidity on the NGX and attract more international investor interest.
