Lafarge Africa Plc has unveiled its ECOPlanet Elephant cement, expanding its portfolio of low-carbon building solutions which emphasise sustainability and green growth in the construction sector.
According to a statement, the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge Africa Plc, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, described the product as a “game changer” for Africa’s built environment. He said the introduction of ECOPlanet Elephant followed the successful launch of ECOPlanet Unicem in 2024.
Alade-Akinyemi noted, “The industry’s positive reception to ECOPlanet Unicem last year demonstrated a clear demand for sustainable building materials. We are proud to now offer our low-carbon ECOPlanet Elephant cement, further empowering our customers to make environmentally conscious choices without compromising on the renowned quality and performance our products are known for.”
He added that the new cement achieves a 30 per cent reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional alternatives, with no compromise on performance.
The Lafarge Africa CEO said, “This launch marks another opportunity to build sustainably across Africa.” He stressed that the company remains committed to “partnering with customers and the supply chain to build better communities through innovative, circular and eco-efficient solutions.”
Also speaking at the launch, the Commercial Director of Lafarge Africa Plc, Gbenga Onimowo, explained that the new ECOPlanet Elephant cement retains the “superior strength, durability, and workability that Elephant cement is known for,” while enabling builders and developers to embrace environmentally friendly construction practices.
Onimowo stated, “For us, building a sustainable future means that we carry our customers and partners on the journey with us. This is why I am very thrilled to see how much positive impact this will have on the industry.”
He explained that ECOPlanet Elephant is already gaining traction among builders, architects and policymakers due to its low carbon footprint and versatility. He added that the cement is suitable for multiple applications, including plastering, concreting, and on-site block-making.
Onimowo also noted that the product meets advanced international green building certifications such as BREEAM, LEED, and EDGE, further demonstrating its alignment with global sustainability standards.
The launch of ECOPlanet Elephant marks Lafarge Africa’s latest step in its broader ambition to decarbonise the construction industry and support Nigeria’s transition to a net-zero future.
