The Ajose Lecture Theatre of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, was aglow on May 19, 2025, as I had the privilege of addressing the Ife Architecture Summit 2.0 as a Guest Speaker. The event, themed “Beyond Build,” was organised by the vibrant Ife Architecture Students’ Association (IFASA).
In my address titled “The Future of Architecture in Nigeria: The Role of Leadership, Mentorship, and Education,” I emphasised the urgent need for visionary leadership, ethical practice, curriculum reform, structured mentorship, and the promotion of Afrocentric design. I also highlighted the importance of stronger collaboration between academia and professional practice, as well as the embrace of innovation and inclusivity in shaping a globally competitive architectural future.
I was honoured to share the stage with respected colleagues: Arc Olusegun Ladega, FNIA, who delivered the keynote address, and Arc (Prof.) C.O. Osasona, FNIA, who served as a panellist. The event drew the presence of eminent university leaders, including Prof. Olusegun Ogunba, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management;, and Arc (Prof.) A.D. Jiboye, Head of the Department of Architecture.
In recognition of my contributions to architectural leadership and national development, IFASA presented me with the Architectural Leadership & Nation-Building Award. Deeply touched by this honour, the Friends of Mobolaji Adeniyi (FOMA) approved the institution of two annual cash prizes of ₦100,000 each for the best-graduating students in B.Sc. and M.Sc. Architecture at OAU, beginning with the current academic session.
Following the summit, we paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, who warmly received us in the company of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Admin), Prof. Yomi Daramola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and a Quantity Surveyor by profession, Prof. Olubola Babalola, and other principal officers of the University. It was a rich moment of mutual respect and institutional connection.
I was accompanied by the Chair of the NIA Osun State Chapter, Arc Oladejo Emmanuel, and warmly welcomed by IFASA President Oyekan Favour, as well as an enthusiastic assembly of future architects whose passion and promise lit up the atmosphere.
This memorable engagement is a reaffirmation of our shared commitment at the NIA to mentorship, educational excellence, and youth empowerment, which are core pillars of the UNITE Agenda. It further strengthens our resolve to nurture the next generation of architects and build a profession anchored in integrity, innovation, and impact.
