Excitement is building across Africa as the African Union Commission and the International Committee of the All Africa Music Awards prepare to announce the host city for the 2025 edition on May 13 at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The race is down to two powerhouse cities, Lagos in Nigeria and Gauteng Province in South Africa, both internationally recognised for their thriving music scenes, cultural vibrancy, and event-hosting prowess.
According to a statement, in 2024, the AU formally invited both countries and wrote directly to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, encouraging them to explore the benefits of hosting the continent’s premier music awards.
Since then, both cities have undergone assessments, stakeholder engagements, and committee evaluations. Lagos, the undisputed home of Afrobeats, is a natural contender.
“Beyond its pulsating music culture, Lagos boasts impressive infrastructure, urban rail lines, upgraded water transport, and a booming real estate sector, all of which reinforce its readiness to welcome thousands of international visitors,” it said.
“Equally compelling is Gauteng, a musical powerhouse credited with exporting Amapiano and Kwaito to the world. Cities like Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Soweto blend deep-rooted cultural heritage with modern event-hosting capacity. The province’s track record includes the 2010 FIFA World Cup and numerous music and film festivals,” it added.
Both leaders, Sanwo-Olu and Lesufi, have expressed strong support, citing tourism growth, job creation, and youth inspiration as key benefits.
AFRIMA’s Chief Experience Officer, Adenrele Niyi, underscored the impact.
“Hosting AFRIMA brings more than music—it brings global visibility, boosts local economies, and leaves a long-lasting legacy through outreach programs and industry summits,” Niyi said.
With a projected global broadcast audience of over 400 million, the host city will enjoy unmatched exposure. Past hosts Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal have seen lasting cultural and economic benefits.
“As Africa counts down to the official announcement, the continent holds its breath. Whether the crown goes to Lagos or Gauteng, AFRIMA 2025 promises to be a spectacular celebration of African music, unity, and creativity,” Niyi stated.
