Abuja, October 2, 2024 – Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, FNSE, President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), held a pivotal discussion with the Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Rt. Hon. Epkeriko Ekpo, focused on fostering collaboration between the NSE and the Federal Government. The meeting, which took place in Abuja, revolved around how the NSE can support government efforts in promoting the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and domestic gas usage as key components of Nigeria’s energy transition strategy.
During the meeting, NSE President highlighted the critical role Nigerian engineers can play in advancing the country’s energy transformation. She advocated for a strong partnership between the NSE and the Ministry to ensure the successful implementation and adoption of CNG, which is integral to Nigeria’s long-term sustainability goals. The President also sought the involvement of Nigerian engineers in the Ministry’s natural gas initiatives, particularly the Nigerian Gas Expansion Project, emphasizing that local engineering expertise would be vital in expanding and sustaining the program.
In response, the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas) expressed full support for the collaboration, commending the NSE’s proactive approach. He extended an invitation to the engineering community to actively engage in educating Nigerians on the advantages of CNG and domestic gas, particularly in terms of reducing emissions and boosting energy efficiency. The Minister also confirmed the Ministry’s readiness to partner with the NSE on capacity-building initiatives, particularly in the training of professionals involved in CNG infrastructure, to ensure safe and efficient installations across the country.
This engagement marks a significant alignment between the engineering sector and the government, positioning Nigerian engineers as key contributors to the nation’s energy transition while addressing critical challenges posed by climate change and its impact on various sectors, including agriculture.
