In a display of solidarity and compassion, the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, FNSE, accompanied by the President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Engr. Prof. S.Z. Abubakar, FNSE, FAEng, and the President of the Association for Consulting Engineering in Nigeria (ACEN) led a high-level delegation to Maiduguri on a condolence visit to the Governor of Borno State, Engr. Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, FNSE, mni.
The visit followed the devastating floods caused by the Alau Dam disaster, which has led to mass displacement, destruction of property, and extensive infrastructural damage in Maiduguri and surrounding areas. Thousands of residents have been impacted, with homes, businesses, and essential infrastructure severely damaged.
During the visit, the joint delegation, which included Vice President of COREN, Engr. Olu Ogunduyile, FNSE, NSE Past President, Engr. Babagana Mohammed, FNSE, National Chairman of the National Institute of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE), Engr. Seun Faluyi, FNSE, and representatives from other relevant divisions, extended their heartfelt condolences to the Governor and the people of Borno State. They presented a variety of relief materials, including first-grade clothing for children aged 3 months to 10 years, first-grade dresses for adults, round-neck t-shirts, and cardigans.
Additionally, the delegation donated a cheque of ₦10 million to support the ongoing recovery and rebuilding efforts in the affected communities.
Governor Zulum expressed his deep appreciation for the engineering bodies’ timely intervention and support, emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address the disaster’s impact and restore normalcy in the affected areas.
In addition to meeting the Governor, the delegation also paid a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, Shehu Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi. The traditional ruler welcomed the delegation and acknowledged the importance of their visit, underscoring the value of the engineering community’s support during this critical time of recovery for Borno State.
