The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) held an informative and incisive event yesterday at the Balmoral Centre, Sheraton Hotel, Lagos; themed “Professionalism Across Board In The Built Environment”. With artisans inclusive in the audience; it was indeed a building stakeholder’s engagement gathering with the intent of bringing together Professionals, Professional bodies, regulatory bodies, Property developers, local council chairmen, community leaders, and technocrats etc to also give room for a networking process.
The event commenced with a remark from the General Manager (GM), Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA); Arc. Gbolahan Oki stating that there is a much needed responsibility of every stakeholder in the Building Construction industry to relatively collaborate and to create a synergy in partnership. Also the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development; Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde spoke about the importance of artisans in the industry while recognizing their presence in different categories stating that the collaboration amongst them is vital.
Amongst the dignitaries present includes Lagos State Government officials, Federal government officials, special delegates “Lagos white cap chiefs” and the executive Governor of Lagos State; Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu who gave a resounding speech appreciating LASBCA for their efforts in the regulation of building construction works across the state.
Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu in his speech highlighted the impact of artisans in the industry ranging from bricklayers, iron-benders, electricians, plumbers, and welders etc, as prominent and instrumental factors to the building construction industry of the built environment.
The governor spoke about the introduction of the Certified Accreditor Programme (CAP) which has been unveiled for professionals in the private sector to enroll and collaborate with the government. According to the governor it is a Public-Private synergy to further accelerate LASBCA’s effectiveness towards optimum service delivery in building construction.
Mr. Governor further stated in that his administration will enforce the right building practices and put an end to building collapse in the state; “It is very crucial at this point in our history to enforce building regulations to the latter, so as to prevent illegal, haphazard and poorly constructed buildings that are detrimental to the well-being of Lagosians. That is why we are strongly advocating that only professionals should be engaged in building constructions in the state.”
“Professionals who should be engaged in the building construction industry are certified builders, architects, structural/civil engineers, geologists, mechanical and electrical engineers.”
The event was quite a platform to sensitive everyone on the need to adhere to building codes to avoid disaster on lives and properties with a short drama on stage from the LASBCA team showcasing the importance of adhering to building codes by the government and patronizing suitable products rather than sub-standard products for the commencement a building construction project.”
