Elektron Energy’s 40MW embedded power plant in Lagos Island is nearing completion as the company prepares to commission the facility for businesses operating in the commercial district.
The power developer disclosed this on Thursday during the Victoria Island Power Customer Experience Day, where customers and business leaders were given a tour of the project and briefed on its progress.
The event provided attendees with a behind-the-scenes view of the project, including technical briefings on the 40MW power plant, the Wärtsilä engine technology powering the facility, and its development ahead of commissioning.
The project is being developed in collaboration with Eko Electricity Distribution Company and under a licence from the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
According to the company, the project is designed to provide dedicated electricity to businesses across Victoria Island through a professionally managed distribution network.
It said the project would provide businesses with an alternative to self-generation while reducing their reliance on diesel generators and giving them greater predictability over their energy costs and supply.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director, Business Development, Elektron Energy, Ayomide Oladapo, said businesses in Victoria Island had for years operated under the constraints of unreliable electricity.
“For years, businesses in Victoria Island have had to operate within the constraints of unreliable power, either absorbing the cost and complexity of self-generation or navigating the uncertainty of the grid. Neither model provides the predictability businesses need to plan, invest and grow with confidence.
“Victoria Island Power changes that equation. By delivering clean, dedicated, professionally managed electricity infrastructure, we are giving businesses access to reliable power without the burden of fuel logistics, generator maintenance or operational disruption. Ultimately, this project is centered on creating the confidence businesses need to focus on growth, productivity and long-term success.”
The 40MW plant is powered by Wärtsilä engine technology.
Speaking on the partnership, Wärtsilä Site Manager, Energy Services & Upgrade, Mika Gummerus, said the project combined technical expertise, infrastructure and long-term planning to improve power supply to businesses.
“Victoria Island Power shows what happens when the right technical expertise, infrastructure and long-term planning come together. Wärtsilä brings decades of experience engineering flexible, efficient power generation, and through our partnership with Elektron, we’re applying that expertise to deliver embedded power directly to one of Lagos’ most important commercial districts.
“It’s a model built on close collaboration; from system design through to operation – and it’s helping make power there more dependable and efficient for the businesses that rely on it,” he stated.
The project is reportedly backed by the ARM-Harith Infrastructure Fund, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, InfraCredit and the Bank of Industry.
Elektron Energy said businesses across Victoria Island could register their interest in joining the network ahead of the commissioning of the project.
