Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, inaugurated a newly upgraded network of roads in Ikoyi, Eti-Osa Local Government Area, on Tuesday.
The initiative was part of his administration’s efforts to reduce travel time and boost productivity in the state.
Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu described the rehabilitation of Ikoyi’s road network as a demonstration of his government’s commitment to transforming the area into a model district that enhances residents’ quality of life and supports Lagos’ economic prosperity.
The roads, spanning a total of 5.9 kilometres, included Oyinkan Abayomi, Femi Okunnu, Macpherson, Ilabere, Ilu, Inupa, and Kuramo Roads.
The project involved the installation of drainage systems, walkways, 80mm interlocking stones, streetlights, and road signage, effectively addressing flooding issues and improving connectivity with Victoria Island, Osborne Road, and the Third Mainland Bridge.
During the commissioning ceremony held at Ilabere Road, the governor emphasised that the roads would enhance mobility, stimulate economic growth, and elevate Lagos’ global competitiveness.
“Our THEMES+ Agenda prioritised transportation and traffic management as critical areas. We recognised that providing world-class road infrastructure would not only improve mobility but also drive economic growth and productivity,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
Highlighting Ikoyi’s strategic importance as a hub for economic activity and property development, the governor recalled the launch of the Ikoyi Urban Regeneration Initiative in July 2020.
This comprehensive plan aimed to tackle flooding, improve traffic flow, and upgrade road networks in the area.
“Phase 1 of this initiative was completed in June 2021, and today we commission Phase 2, encompassing the rehabilitation of seven key roads,” he said.
“These roads are lifelines for economic activity and community well-being, reducing travel times, minimising flooding, and boosting property and business values in Ikoyi.”
Sanwo-Olu urged residents to take ownership of the newly completed roads and highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining infrastructure.
“Infrastructure requires proper maintenance, and this is a shared responsibility between the government and the communities that benefit from it,” he said.
The governor also called on residents to avoid actions such as dumping waste into drainage systems or illegal parking, which could compromise the durability of the infrastructure.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engr Olufemi Daramola, noted that the road network was part of the administration’s broader urban regeneration projects aligned with the THEMES+ Agenda.
He emphasised that the upgraded roads would ease traffic congestion and improve access across Ikoyi, a key residential and commercial hub.
Several dignitaries, including Senator Wasiu Sanni-Eshinlokun, Hon. Noheem Adams, and Hon. Desmond Elliot, commended the governor for his visionary leadership and commitment to delivering impactful infrastructure projects in Lagos State.
